The first half being split up seemed a little pointless to me but if thats the way they wanted to present it, I think its a cool idea. The first and last of these were versions of the song itself, with notable roles for the band’s guitarists John Cipollina and Gary Duncan. This album cover really made me think this would be a country soundtrack or something so I was pleasantly surprised by the club-style psych rock I was met with. It was based around the theme of Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?,” in no fewer than six episodic interpretations. Even more ambitiously, the first side of the disc was a suite of songs, running more than 25 minutes in total. They juxtapose what they are trying to visualize among many different moods, whether it be experimenting on blues, or brooding despondency. But this is not as wonderful as I have made it out to be. Quite unusually for a sophomore record, Happy Trails was a live album, taken from performances by the band at the famed Fillmore East and Fillmore West venues. Quicksilver Messenger Service s live album Happy Trails is strikingly visual enough to paint a metaphorical sound canvas in your mind. That day marked the release of Happy Trails, their second album for Capitol, which became their one LP to win gold certification in America. On March 17, 1969, San Francisco rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service unveiled their finest hour, at least in commercial terms. Gary Duncan, a founding member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, died at the age of 72 a few weeks ago.
